I think at some point environmentalists will start protesting it.

Amazon’s ridiculous packaging isn’t new. So this was what I ordered:

Kinja'd!!!

Mandatory since now I have a BMW I guess.

This was how they sent it to me:

Kinja'd!!!

This is compounding to the fact that most of the sale stuff are on timers, i.e. adding it to your cart means you need to checkout within like 15 minutes, or you lose it. So essentially, you’re forced to split your orders, you might end up with a bunch of cardboard boxes with just one item in it.

I mean, sure, it’s their selling point that you get unlimited free shipping, but still.

Don’t they sometimes combine things after the fact even if they are different orders? I swear I’ve had a day that I made two orders and had them show up in one box. Of course it also depends where they are coming from - doesn’t make sense to combine things if coming from warehouses on opposite ends of the country. As far as the little item in a huge box goes - the packagers were probably running around like crazy people all day for the promotion. I’ll give them the benefit of the doubt and assume that the line the gauge came down was out of small boxes at the moment and they had to throw it in whatever box they had to keep the line moving.

For regular 3-5 day free shipping, yes. Prime 2-day, no. And this is for items that are ALREADY in the same warehouse in Mississauga, that’s what usually in-stock Prime items are.

That’s why every few months I load all this crap up in my wife’s car and take it to the dump to be recycled.

Kudos for doing the right thing instead of shoving it all in regular garbage.

I had a similar experience. I ordered five robe hooks for our new master bathroom. Each one came in it’s own shipment, which was a box roughly the same size as in your pics. They all came from the same shipping center. WTF.

Pic of hook box as reference.

We have both trash and recycling bins but the bigger boxes take up too much room in the recycling and it only gets collected every other week. I break down some of the smaller ones to go in the bin but inevitably the bigger ones (and plenty of the smaller ones) pile up.

I have a degree in English. One of my professors told us all to keep an eye on this online bookstore called Amazon. I thought she was exceptionally short sighted, teaching English and thinking that a bookstore was going to be the next big thing. She dumped her savings into it, like a huge fool. This was in the very late 90's.

Kinja'd!!!

No idea if her investment completely survived the big dot com explosion but hopefully once she was worth hundreds of millions on paper she sold some of it.

Thankfully my recycling service will take cardboard if it’s broken down and leaned next to the bin. Before that I had to load them up and take them to work to be added to the recycling pile that gets taken to a county garage where they have a cardboard dumpster.

I find it surprising that even with two day air shipping and all that packaging it can still be less expensive than buying locally.

My old apartment had recycling and trash dumpsters where I never even knew or cared when it was collected. Nice little perk compared to living in a townhouse where you have to take a bin out to the street.

Trash is every week, and they alternate every other week between recycling and large trash item pickup. They only take stuff outside the bins on large item days. The regular trash and recycling trucks pick up the bins like mini dumpsters, but on large item days they come by with a claw truck kinda like this.

Our old place had dumpsters but didn’t offer recycling so I brought stuff to work. We get recycle picked up every week where we are except the two times a year they do bulk pick-up.

Actually it’s local, at least in my case. Mississauga is within the GTA, just right next to the airport.

IIRC for Toronto garbage is every other week, but recycling and organics is every week.

I would imagine it’s preferable that they reduce the frequency of garbage to encourage you to recycle and reduce landfill.

Yes. I made six different purchases on prime day and I got emails saying they would be combined into three shipments.

I actually ordered 3 separate items on prime day but they all shipped together. I don’t know if that’s the norm, but it’s good to know they aren’t boxing everything individually.

A relative bought a bunch of shirts for someone at christmas from khols and they each came in an individual box 6x12x18 in. i can’t comprehend how their shipping payments to ups/fedex must be.

Holy shit every other week for garbage pickup?? I just think of the flies and rodents and scary shit that would be taking over my apartment complex if they did that. I wish they came every damn day for that, the atrocious smelling dumpsters in the summer time just baking away in the sun are the worst.

Up here condo complexes are actually considered commercial and have private pickups. It’s houses that’s done by the city runs.

Besides most wet garbage should go in organics.

I wish we could be environmentally conscious enough here to do composting. I imagine that would save a good amount of the smelly trash issues.

That is like... a week of Amazon recycle in my house.

Luckily we get “free” 64 gallon recycle bins.
